Divergent

“We are creatures of loss; we have left everything behind. I have no home, no path, and no certainty.”

  • Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Tris is forced to make a terrible choice. In a divided society where everyone must conform, Tris does not fit.
So she ventures out alone, determined to discover where she truly belongs. Shocked by her brutal new life Tris can trust no one. And yet she is drawn to a boy who seems to both threaten and protect her.
The hardest choice lies ahead.

  • What is it about?

Beatrice and her brother have to decide their future following the advice of a test and their own thoughts. This ceremony is one of the most important events, where every teenager and their families gather together and watch the new generations entering the factions.
Choosing a different faction from the one you were born in means you will have to leave your family aside. Your faction must go first than your family… However, Beatrice doesn’t go along with that idea and she will have to make a hard choice with regard to her and everybody’s future. Will she be able to stand against all the circumstances?

  • Opinion:

For those of you, who always complain about films based on books, I would say that they did a great job with this one. Of course, books have usually more details than films, but in this case they don’t mess up much. Therefore, if you liked the film, you should really read the book.
The main character, Beatrice, grows up all along this first part of the trilogy. At first, she is a quiet girl, but the thing is that she hasn’t shown her true colours yet, that is, a strong person, who is able to survive in the hardest conditions. She may feel alone on the way, but soon enough she will realize that there are a lot of people surrounding her, who will fight for her no matter what. This evolution is one of the most interesting things of the story, of course there are other interesting characters like Four or the evil woman (for those who have already read the book or watched the movie, you know who I am talking about).
To sum up, whether you watch the movie or not, you should read the book. It is easy to read and may give you another outlook on why things turn out that way. However, it doesn’t give you much of a clue about Four or Tris’ family. I guess that if you really want to know about Four you have to read his book, but I haven’t read it yet so I can’t say anything about it. And for the family members, I think there is no book yet, but one can never know what future brings.
